Barn Shed Plans

A barn is traditionally used for agricultural purposes such as the storage of farm equipment and livestock. Modern uses of a barn also include equipment storage in addition to workshop space. Homeowners with large properties often build barn sheds, especially in rural areas. Barn shed plans allow a homeowner to build a barn that will improve the value of the property, and they will also increase the available storage space. These plans also enable the owner to build the barn at a fraction of the cost of paying a contractor to perform this task. It is therefore essential that barn shed plans be of the highest quality.

Hay Storage

The variety of barn shed plans reflects the many possible uses for barns. The upper area in a traditional barn is typically used to store hay. A door at the top of each end of the barn allows the hay to be lifted into the hayloft with a system of pulleys and trolleys. This type of barn may also have a trapdoor in the floor of the hayloft, allowing a worker to drop hay into animal mangers. Some barns are attached to the main house, which permits workers to perform chores without going outdoors.

Animal Storage

Barn shed plans often include animal pens. Large animals are kept on the lower floor, while small animals may be kept on the upper floor. A barn used to keep horses typically has a tack room, which will be used to store riding equipments such as bridles and saddles. A milk house is used in dairy barns to collect and store milk. It may be a room in the barn or a separate structure attached to the barn. A dairy barn often has a wooden grain bin in the loft that has a chute leading to the ground floor. Modern animal barns often have an indoor corral that allows veterinarians to treat sick animals more easily.

Equipment Storage

A barn may also be used to store large mobile equipment such as tractors, lawn mowers and leaf blowers. The purpose of these barns is to protect the vehicles from rain and snow when they are not in use. The barn shed plans for these types of barns typically have an open design, which may consist of a single area to be used as a drive bay.

Appearance

The exterior appearance of the barn should generally match that of the other buildings on the property. Traditional barns are typically made of wood and have a rustic appearance. Modern barns are usually made of aluminum or stainless steel and have a more functional appearance. Barn shed plans should provide for a sturdy construction, regardless of their appearance. The open design of many barns means they often do not have internal support structures.

Preparation

Barns may need a concrete foundation to store heavy equipment. This will prevent the equipment from sinking into the bare ground. This type of barn will require the construction site to be cleared and leveled before pouring the concrete slab. The major structures of the barn should be determined in advance and built as part of the initial construction, rather than adding them on after the barn is already built.
